Bill Burkett

Bill grew up in northwest Georgia, enlisting in the Army at 17 as an Intelligence Analyst (96B). After completing AIT and jump school, he was assigned as an intel analyst to the 82nd Airborne Division’s 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty), North Carolina. Weeks after the September 11th attacks, Bill was selected to augment U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in Tampa, Florida as Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) commenced. After supporting CENTCOM for seven months, Bill attended and passed the Ranger Orientation Program (ROP) in the spring of 2002. In July 2002 Bill was assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment’s Military Intelligence Detachment (RMID) and deployed shortly after in support of OEF.

After completing six combat tours in the Middle East, Bill was selected for the Warrant Officer Candidate School (WOCS) as an All-Source Intelligence Technician (350F) at Fort Rucker (now Fort Novosel), Alabama. Bill’s first assignment as a Warrant Officer was G2, 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea. While in Korea Bill met his future wife, Irene, who was serving as the 2ID G2X.

After nearly a year in Korea, Bill attended and passed ROP and was assigned to the 75th ’s Military Intelligence Company (MICO) in the Regimental Special Troops Battalion (RSTB). After three years and three deployments, Bill was selected as a targeting and liaison officer at an inter-agency partner in the Washington Metro Area, serving in that capacity for five years. While assigned with the inter-agency, Bill deployed multiple times, both to combat zones and American embassies focused on counterterrorism.

Bill’s final assignment was with the Special Operations Command – CENTRAL (SOCCENT) in 2015, deploying twice, subsequently retiring in August 2019. After retiring Bill took a contracting job with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) as a sensitive activities advisor to CENTCOM for three years. In September 2022 Bill assumed duties at U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) J8 as the future force manning advisor for all national mission forces and the 75th Ranger Regiment.

Bill is the recipient of several accolades, including the Knowlton Award, the Ranger tab, and numerous Army awards and schools. Bill has held a wide array of positions as an intelligence professional, ranging from infantry battalion S-2 analyst to serving as the J2 for an O-6 level combined joint special operations command overseas.

Bill’s hobbies include working with veteran-focused charity organizations, spearfishing, hunting, and competition BBQ. He is currently pursuing a degree in forensic anthropology from the University of South Florida. Irene and Bill have three dynamic boys and reside in the Tampa, Florida area.
